Swinger etiquette: the unwritten rules, written down

Like any community, the lifestyle has its own etiquette. Most of it comes down to respect, honesty and consent. Here are the basics.

Messaging

Read the profile before you message. Mention something you have in common — a game, a hobby, a place — rather than a one-line opener.

Respect what people say they're not into. If someone doesn't reply or says no thanks, leave it there.

Don't send explicit photos unless someone has clearly asked for them.

First meets

Be on time, be honest about who's coming, and look like your photos. Keep the first meet social, in a public place.

Agree in advance whether it's a drink-only meet. Nobody owes anyone anything.

Socials, parties and clubs

Follow the host's rules. Ask before joining in or touching anyone. A closed door usually means private.

Couples: check in with each other during the evening. Singles: respect that couples' boundaries are set by both partners.

Afterwards

A short, kind message the next day is good manners, whether or not you want to meet again. Be honest — politely.

Questions

Is it rude to say no?

Never. Saying no is normal, and good swingers take it gracefully.
